Scholarship Serves: Sam’s Beauty and Bite
Sweetness. Spice. Sharpness. Grace. Strength.
For her first-ever cocktail creation, Double Dutch Female Bartending Scholar Sam wanted to make something that represented the many different sides of womanhood.
The result was Beauty and Bite - a sweet, sour and spicy tequila cocktail inspired by Sam’s own tastes, her scholarship journey and the community she found along the way.

A cocktail with meaning
As part of the graduation from our Female Bartending Scholarship, each scholar has the opportunity to create and present a signature cocktail.
For Sam, this was a particularly special challenge: Beauty and Bite was the first cocktail she had ever created.
Rather than simply choosing ingredients that tasted great together, she wanted every element of the drink to mean something.
“I created Beauty and Bite to represent the beautiful duality of womanhood: sweetness, spice, sharpness, grace and strength.”
It was also Sam’s way of dedicating something back to the Double Dutch community and bringing different aspects of her scholarship journey together in one glass.
Building Beauty and Bite
Each ingredient represents a different quality:
Agave brings the sweetness.
Elderflower represents grace.
Lemon provides the sharpness.
Tequila with chilli brings the inner fire.
And Double Dutch represents freshness and the spirit of community.
Together, they create the sweet, sour and spicy flavour profile Sam loves.
The result is a cocktail that reflects the idea behind its name perfectly: elegant at first, with a bold bite to finish.

More than a first cocktail
One of our favourite things about the Female Bartending Scholarship is seeing our scholars take what they’ve learned and make it completely their own.
Beauty and Bite captures exactly that.
For Sam, creating her first cocktail became an opportunity to tell a story - about womanhood, about her own tastes and about the community that had been part of her journey.
And we think a first-ever cocktail is definitely one worth remembering 💛
